Frequently Asked Questions

OSFP Transceivers and Cables

What’s the difference between OSFP and QSFP-DD?

Both support 400G, and 800G, with OSFP additionally enabling 1.6T (theoretically supported by QSFP-DD but not yet commercially available). OSFP’s larger form factor provides superior thermal performance for AI/ML scalability, while QSFP-DD maintains backward compatibility with legacy QSFP infrastructure. Notably, 800G InfiniBand is exclusive to OSFP.

Are OSFP transceivers compatible with QSFP ports?

No, OSFP transceivers are not physically compatible with QSFP ports due to differences in size and connector design. Adapters can be used to fit QSFP transceivers into OSFP cages, but OSFP transceivers cannot be used in QSFP-DD ports.

What transmission distances are supported by OSFP transceivers?

OSFP transceivers support a range of distances depending on the module type, from 100 meters over MMF (SR), 500 meters over SMF (DR), and 2 kilometers (FR) and up to 100+ kilometers or more with coherent ZR and ZR+ variants. NADDOD offers options including 2xSR4, SR4, DR4, XDR4, PLR4, FR4, LR4, 2xFR4, ZR and ZR+ OSFP transceivers.

Can OSFP and QSFP-DD modules work together in a 400G/800G link?

Yes, if both ends use identical specs (e.g., 400G-DR4 OSFP + 400G-DR4 QSFP-DD). Compatibility depends on matching protocols and speeds, not form factors.
