NVIDIA/Mellanox Original MMA4Z00-NS400 is an InfiniBand (IB) and Ethernet (ETH) 400Gb/s, Single-port, OSFP, SR4 multimode parallel transceiver using a single, 4-channel MPO-12/APC optical connector. The Short Reach 4-channel (SR4) design uses 100G-PAM4 modulation and has a maximum fiber reach of 50-meters using OM4 multimode fiber and assumes two optical patch panels in the link.

When paired with the multimode fiber patch cord M4MPOA12FB, the 400G OSFP SR4 can reach a transmission distance of up to 50 meters.

Why does the 400G OSFP SR4 module use MPO/APC (Angled Polished Connector)?

Because the 100G-PAM4 optoelectronic devices of this module are highly sensitive to reflections inside optical fibers. Compared with UPC (Ultra Physical Contact, flat polished connector), APC (8° Angled Polished Connector) can significantly reduce return loss.
